Tooth enamel is designed by nature to be strong and durable enough to handle biting off, chewing and grinding hard foods. Unfortunately, there are still times when an accident or oral injury can actually break, fracture or chip a tooth. So long as the internal structures of the tooth are healthy, Dr. Jay Stucky can often repair the broken tooth, by replacing the enamel layer with a crown.
Dr. Jay Stucky will first need to examine and X-ray the tooth to assess the overall health of the internal structures. If the damage extends into the pulp or root of the tooth, he might need to perform a root canal to restore the damaged structures.
Dr. Jay Stucky will then remove all of the tooth enamel, leaving behind an abutment. This will later serve as the anchor for your permanent crown. Once this is done, he will create a detailed impression of the abutment, as well as the surrounding teeth and your bite pattern. Then he will install a hard plastic temporary crown.
The impression will then be sent to a professional dental lab where your permanent crown is produced. The material used for the crown will be determined by the tooth’s primary function and its appearance in your smile.
Dr. Jay Stucky will call you in for a brief second appointment, when your new crown is ready. The temporary crown is removed and your permanent crown is cemented onto the abutment.
